What do you want to learn?
Right now we teach Spanish and German. Every course has 24 lessons, with grammar and exercises, and is taught in more than one language. More languages, and more languages to learn in, are on the way. Open the app to see what is on offer today.
We can mix and match most Latin-script languages to learn with most languages to study in, so many more combinations are to come. Tell us which combos you want to see.
This is an alpha release. The German course is missing images for lessons 13 to 24. Sometimes things break, content changes, you will find mistakes and we want to hear about them. The Tell us box at the end of every lesson is the channel.
Optimize your viewing experience
Glottomania runs in the browser, so there is nothing to install from an app store. Put it on your home screen once, and from then on it opens full screen, without the address bar or the browser buttons, like an app.
iPhone and iPad
- Open www.glottomania.com in Safari. It has to be Safari, not Chrome.
- Tap the Share button, the square with the arrow pointing up, at the bottom of the screen.
- Scroll down the list and tap Add to Home Screen.
- Tap Add in the top right corner.
Android
- Open www.glottomania.com in Chrome.
- Tap the three dots in the top right corner.
- Tap Add to Home screen, or Install app if your phone shows that instead.
- Tap Add, or Install.
Glottomania is now an icon on your home screen. Open it from there.
Tips
- Sign in once inside the home-screen version. It remembers you.
- Signed in with the wrong account? Sign out here, then sign in again inside the home-screen version.
- If the page ever looks stale, close it fully and open it again from the icon.
- Sound plays through your phone speaker or headphones as usual. Silent mode on iPhone can mute it, so flip the side switch if you hear nothing.
We believe you are an adult beginner, or someone who has tried to learn a language before without really gaining traction.
What you get
- Currently everything is free, including what we are about to add.
- In a few weeks lessons 1 to 4 will remain free, and you will receive an offer to become a founding member for $3 a month or $24 a year, for access to all lessons 5 to 24.
- Courses are gated: you complete lesson 4 to open lesson 5, and so on.
- Founding members also get a hotline directly to us, plus other goodies we are developing.
What we ask
- Try at least one lesson, and tell us one thing about it: a list of pros, a list of cons, a wish list, a bug list.
- It takes about 20 minutes, on your phone or in your browser.
You want to commit to your studies, but you could sense that the other methods on offer were not the way to go.

Back in the early 2000s I enjoyed studying Italian the old-school BBC way: watch a photographed scene, listen to the accompanying audio and repeat the lines. I became quite good at it. It was as if every scene became yours, and when you encountered similar situations in Italy you already had one experience to fall back on. Then life changed, and my reasons to speak Italian vanished, and with them my Italian skills.
Over the years, every so often, I felt an urge to get back on the horse again and shopped around for this study method, only to end up empty-handed every time. I concluded it had become too expensive to produce in the internet era. I tried a few of the popular, cheap-to-produce methods but found them useless and boring in comparison. So I resigned myself to never studying a language again.
Then AI happened, and I realized I can now make on my own what used to take a whole professional production team. So I decided to produce the language learning app I want. You are looking at the result, and I hope you will like it. That said, it is still early stages, and I already know of several mistakes I have left in my wake taking it this far. I hope you will help me find them and report them back to me. I will read all your notes, although I hope I will be too busy to answer them all.
